kabaka's lake

Kabaka’s lake is one of the largest man-made lakes in Uganda located 5km away from Kampala the capital city Ndeba Rubaga division between Nabunya road and ring road.

The Kabaka’s lake is among the top tourist attraction while on your Kampala city tour safari it should not miss on your package. Uganda’s largest manmade lake, Africa’s dugout lake constructed in a circular shape with an island inside is a jewel to the Buganda kingdom and cultural heritage of Buganda. The lake has no inlet river tributary to supply it water but rather has underground springs that supplies water to it and surprisingly whether in dry season or wet season the water levels remain constant.

an island on kabaka's lake

The Kabaka’s lake was dug out in 1880 by the all 52 Buganda clans under the orders of Ssekabaka Mwanga II to act as an escape route for the king (kabaka) from the British armed conflicts. Ssekabaka Mwanga ii is  famously known for his aggressiveness, notorious and ruthless holistic killing of Uganda martyrs but like any other human being he has his positive achievements for example the geared the construction of Uganda’s largest man-made lake.

History behind the construction of Kabaka’s lake is very interesting one should visit the lake and explore history of its formation yourself as the guides will take you through. It’s located in the heart Of Ndeba town, and it’s a home to various bird species.

The Kabaka Mwanga ii wanted the lake to act as his escape route from the British armed conflicts so he had intention that whenever the situation get worse he would swim into it and runway.

The kabaka also had another plan of creating a channel to lake Victoria such that he can cruise from his palace to lake Victoria to do spot fishing it’s on record that Ssekabaka Mwanga liked swimming and fishing and he could find it had to walk to lake Victoria for fishing so he decide to come up with the plan to create the channel that can led him to the lake. But his plans were not successful because it was affected by religious wars that happened in Buganda kingdom in around 1880-1885 and he could not finish his plan.

Apart from the escape route, the Ssekabaka Mwanga also had plans to get easy access to his palace in Mulungu hills so close to Lake Victoria built by his father kabaka Mutesa before his death.

In 1880 when the kabaka ‘s lake was dug out, Buganda had a population of about 2 million people they all jointly combined to dig out the lake of their loved king . However the Royal people like princes, princesses, parish chiefs Saza Chiefs refused to join the common people and they were reported to the king .kabaka Mwanga reacted by taking up a task by himself to join the people who had obeyed to dig, in doing so the prince, chiefs and princesses got ashamed and as well joined the king and people to do the activity.

Currently, the lake covers an area of about 2 square kilometer with 200 ft. depth. It’s among the top attractions in Kampala and it can be visited while on your safari in Kampala city tour with Africa tours adventure, the jewel site heritage for Buganda kingdom.

The amazing side of this beautiful lake is that it’s a paradise for birders some of bird species that can be spotted include little egrets, marabou stock among others. The man-made has got an interesting picturesque view surrounded by fascinating environment.

In Buganda annual tourism expo than happens every year around August, the king (kabaka) takes the courtesy to officiate the watersport at the lake with his subjects. The kabaka is accompanied by his soldiers known as Abambowa dressed smartly in the traditional cultural attires well-armed with shields and spears, his prime minister known as katikiro, ministers as well as other dignitaries.

A visit to Kabaka’s will offer you a chance to see the Idi Amin’s torture chambers , the Kabaka’s palace as the wells the four gate ways to Kabaka’s palace with their meaning , the lake is just located adjacent to them . You will also observe people crossing the lake using traditional dugout canoes. There is an island where the king (the kabaka) goes for rituals occasionally. The Kabaka’s lake now is the resting place for local people who go there to get fresh air, listening to the sounds of the birds; there are plans to construct accommodation around the lake to boost tourism.

What is the equator?

The Equator is an imaginary line that cuts the earth into Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. While the equator crosses through Uganda the most iconic spot of equator crossing is at Kayabwe just 72 kilometers from Kampala city.

Equator water Experiments

It’s at equator where water flows to clock wise and encounter anti clockwise both northern and southern hemisphere. The water drainage at equator line while demonstrating carioles effect will show you water flowing to different hemispheres both north and southern.

This explains why the objects near or nearer to equator deflects further faster than those nearest to north and South Pole. The Coriolis Effect also causes weather systems like hurricanes   to move in different directions at different hemispheres.

One of the amazing demonstrations is the experiment of the an egg where you will see many tourists , visitors balancing the egg on the nail and nowhere else where it can be done other than at the equator line.

Is one lighter while at equator?  Many visitors, tourists ask this question and the answer is yes. You will find yourself less by 3 % at equator line this is because weight is a force that gravity acts on a mass.

Along the equator any one’s weight will be less by 0.5% thus gravity is less 0.5 % less to equator this is inclined to the earth not being a perfect sphere .

You will be 10 km away from the actual center of the earth while standing at the equator unlike standing at poles. Gravity is therefore slightly less at the equator because it falls off with a distance.

  1. Souvenir Shops and Restaurants

There is a variety of restaurant and craft shops at Kayabwe equator  all products at this shops are hand made by local people you can buy t-shirt print  I crossed the Uganda equator

Karibuni Lounge Entebbe: Is the Exclusivity Worth the Price?

0
Karibu Lounge

Ah, Entebbe! Lakeside paradise of tropical animals, Sunday outings and high-end retail therapy, but also home to Uganda’s international airport, a traffic hub that just keeps growing.

Never shy for attention, the airport has been known for international incidents, major UN-led regional operations, and a great starting point for flying safaris. Over the years, Entebbe has grown into what we see today – an airport that handled more than 1.5 million passengers in 2015.

The expansion programme that was started in that same year, is set to not only expand the operational capacity of the hub to as much as 100,000 flight operations a year, but also to make Uganda a serious competitor for a larger chunk of the market of travellers seeking to experience all the wonders of East Africa.

As anyone who has travelled out of the international terminal at the airport knows, you could be forgiven for believing you had been teleported to one of Old Kampala’s smaller shopping malls and not the international departures area of an airport.

The two cafeterias airside are not bad, and Crane Cafeteria does offer a good hamburger, but the prices can only be described as high – the last time I checked, a local beer set me back 9K Uganda Shillings.

Not at all a fitting farewell. If you prefer a coffee (and fewer people), please make your way straight ahead as you pass through immigration. The smaller coffee shop there is still over priced, though.

Lately, I have taken to happily paying $35 to the very agreeable persons running the Karibuni. The lounge is situated at the very end of the departures hall, and is well worth the visit, if you can make it past all the souvenir shops, the throng of the food-court-cum-pre-departure kafunda and the pre-boarding security lines at the gates. Come down to this end of the hall, and all of this calms down.

Lots of seating. Especially empty if you’re in between the larger flights like KLM , Emirates & Qatar. Very pleasant. Photo: LoungeBuddy

Karibu Lounge

As soon as you pass through the lounge’s doors, the faint feeling of air conditioning strikes you – as something you didn’t know you were missing. Much like the humming of a generator suddenly going quiet.

The reception desk at the Karibuni Lounge is usually manned by very welcoming and polite staff. They will accept your cash for entry, or – if you are lucky enough to be travelling in business class – the lounge invitation you were given at check-in.

They do not recognize all frequent flyer cards, so do make sure to get your invitation as you drop off your luggage. Behind the desk, you can marvel at the large collection of promotional aircraft models the lounge has accumulated over the years. Most airlines serving Entebbe are represented – as well as some that aren’t.

With your entry secured, you turn to face the lounge proper, and are greeted by a full-size pool table. What a nice touch! Having visited lounges in many airports, I can safely say pool tables are a rarity. Everything about the table seems in order, and I get the impression that this is a point of pride for the lounge, something that is taken good care of.

I’ve never seen anyone play at the pool table, though. I hope they at least use it for company lock-ins! Other amenities at the Karibuni Lounge are somewhat scarce, but they do offer a complementary massage chair, as well as computers and a meeting room – great for those power meetings with the people you are going to spend the next 5-10 hours with next to on the plane.

A single massage chair with a sign for requesting 15-minutes maximum use when busy. A nice touch. Photo: LoungeBuddy Two workstations with internet and printing available. Photo: LoungeBuddy

Even if you don’t have a meeting or other business to attend to, there are plenty of places to sit in the lounge. The colour scheme is red, yellow and black, and the seats are comfortable. Secure yourself a seat by the windows, and you will get the best views of the apron and runway anywhere in the airport. From the large, north-facing windows at the far end, I have myself witnessed a lot of exciting traffic of the kind you just can’t see in Europe anymore: TurboLETs, DC-3s and a host of smaller piston engines and turboprops. Most times, the traffic pattern at Entebbe opens for landings from the north, which means you will always see your aircraft arriving, giving you ample time to pack up your stuff before heading to the gate. Not that you should ever need to – gate personell usualy comes to pick you once boarding is under way.

While spending time at the lounge, make sure you have a nibble at some of the food on offer. While the selection is lacklustre at best, they do offer warm samosas that are to die for. Cold sandwiches, warm pies and nuts, as well as fresh fruit, round out the food offerings. If you’re more in the market for drinks, the choices improve slightly: Whether you want a soda, wine, beer, spirits or plain water, there is always a bottle waiting for you.

Many hot items like vegetarian pizza, chicken pies, beef samosas, chicken sausage and more. Also other items like chips and nuts. A full bar serviced by friendly staff including several options of beers and even espresso. Photo: LoungeBuddy

For a completely different type of refreshment, step into the complementary shower. There is one in each of the restrooms, and the staff will be happy to provide you with towels. While showering in an airport may seem a little awkward the first time, nothing beats the feeling of stepping aboard your flight refreshed like that. The restrooms are placed behind the largest feature in the lounge, namely the massive waterfall that contributes to the freshness of the air and the constant sound of running water.

As soon as you return to the departures hall, you’ll realize the subtle effect the air conditioning has had on you, and the joy of being in silence. Noise levels in the main hall are significantly higher than in the Karibuni Lounge, as well as on the aircraft. You’ll be happy you had this time to brace yourself for the trek to your next destination, especially if you’re travelling in the back of the plane

Is Karibuni Lounge worth the cost, though?

This writer would say yes. You can certainly get the same food and drinks at the Crane Cafeteria, and almost always end up using the airport’s free WiFi. But the better seating, free food and drinks and cleaner lavatories, as well as the peace and quiet, make it worth the price. Would I use it at twice the price? No.

With the expansion going on at Entebbe, the prospect of more lounges being added is great news for all lounge hounds. Hopefully, the increased competition will drive prices down and make the Karibuni Lounge even better than it already is.

Experience Cooking Matooke on your Safari

Cooking Matooke in Uganda

Matooke is a plantain and it belongs to the carbohydrate group of food.

It is a staple food for mainly people who live in the Central, western and South-western regions of Uganda. It was mostly common among the Baganda who occupy the central region of Uganda called the Buganda land but later it spread to other parts of the country.

Matooke can be cooked in many different ways as preferred which include but not limited to; steaming, boiling, grilling, and baking but the indigenous way of cooking it is by steaming and this is according to the Baganda where it originated from.

When cooking matooke by the steaming method, one needs the following;

  • Matooke
  • 8 banana leaves and stalks.
  • 2 banana fibres
  • Saucepan
  • Water
  • Source of fire.

The following procedure is followed,

The matooke is pealed and washed and the banana leaves are prepared too by removing the stalk and folding them neatly.

The sauce pan for steaming in is washed, put water and the stalks, then two banana leaves are added in as well.

The matooke is placed in a banana leaf with some two banana fibres have been put placed below crosswise. The matooke has to be arranged neatly and then wrapped with the banana leaf and tied firmly with the banana fibres.

The tied matooke is now placed in the prepared saucepan and one pair of banana leaves is put on top and tackled in neatly. Another pair of banana leaves is put in an opposite direction and tacked in firmly too.

The saucepan is put on a strong fire until the boiling is steady and the steam is coming through the banana leaves, now the fire is reduced to medium and the matooke is left to cook for 30-45 minutes. If water dries up, a little is added.

When the banana leaves have turned from green to brown, the saucepan is removed from the fire and placed on either banana peelings or used banana fibres but not a bare ground.

The matooke is now uncovered carefully and the banana leaves are placed on a clean surface. One of the banana leaves is used to press the matooke and to ensure that all is pressed properly, the matooke can be turned by raising the banana fibres a little.

The pressed matooke is neatly covered and all the removed banana leaves are put back on top and tacked in neatly too. A new banana leaf may be added if necessary.

More water is then added to the saucepan but it should not touch the matooke, and the matooke is put back on fire and brought to boil for 5 minutes and then bring the heat low to cook gently for 30 minutes or as long as required (the longer the matooke cooks, the better the flavour and texture).

The matooke is served hot and wrapped in a clean cooked banana leaf to preserve the heat.

The accompanied sauce can be of your choice but fish in ground nuts, chicken stew, or meat stew are always preferred. You can uncover such on your own by taking a Self Drive tour in Uganda or you can hire a car with a driver to take you around Uganda. Do not limit yourself to exotic foods, try out the local dish and be your own testimony.
